Saturday School:

Many volunteers have found their groove by participating in the school’s Saturday School program.  Saturday School is designed to provide students with extra instruction in the core subject areas, opportunities for advanced courses, and a chance to receive 1:1 assistance from teachers and tutors.  Saturday school operates two to three times per month from 9am to 12pm.  Saturday School is open to students in grades three through eight and is typically attended by 30 to 60 students.  Saturday School is optional except for students on academic recovery.

The two main outlets for volunteers at Saturday School are as a tutor or by providing the “snack” which is served during the fun hour between 11am to 12pm.  The snack typically consists of something like hot dogs and chips or nachos along with a drink.  Students greatly appreciate the snack – an opportunity for true service.

Tutors are also a critical need at Saturday School.  The most effective tutors are able to attend the vast majority of Saturday School sessions and are flexible about who they work with.  Ideally, tutors do establish meaningful relationships with one or two students and progress from tutor to mentor to life-long friend.  This type of investment is priceless and can often make the difference between success and failure.
