Students in grades K4 through 4th grade are considered to be in the primary grades. A rigorous explicit phonics program and Saxon Math provide the cornerstone of the primary grades curriculum. The vast majority of students are reading at the first grade level by the end of their K4 year. All primary grades students work out of the math textbook that is designed for students one year older. For example, fourth grade students use the Saxon textbook designed for fifth grade students.
All primary grade classrooms are managed by a classroom teacher and a full-time educational assistant. More often than not, educational assistants are certified classroom teachers who have chosen, often for family reasons, to play a supporting rather than a lead role. Students receive instruction in Word of God, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science in the homeroom. Additionally, students in the primary grades visit specialty teachers to receive instruction in art, music, and dance or physical education.
Prospective parents are encouraged to make arrangements to visit the school to experience first hand the intense and demanding yet warm and loving environment of St. Marcus primary grade classrooms. |
